Teeth Cleaning in Novi Michigan
The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) recommends that everyone visits a dentist for a checkup once every six months. There are a few reasons why this recommendation has been made:
Regular dental cleanings can help prevent most types of oral diseases
Receiving a professional dental cleaning helps reach areas that personal care can neglect
The dentist can help reinforce proper dental habits, especially flossing and using mouthwash
Most people who take regular care of their oral hygiene will not experience any pain or discomfort during a standard dental cleaning. Our dentists and oral hygienists use a variety of tools to perform some deep cleaning. If the cleaning is painful or uncomfortable, topical anesthetics can typically be used.
Teeth Cleanings and Diagnosis
Most dental cleanings will also include a variety of diagnostic services. Below are some of the common services we perform alongside teeth cleaning:
- Evaluating the health of your gum tissue
- Take x-rays of any significant tooth decay or other questionable issues
- Screen for oral cancer
- Go over any changes in your overall health, or obtain your medical history if you’re a new patient
- Examining your bite and suggesting treatment to correct any issues
If any issues are found, we will either try to correct them during the same visit, or make an appointment to treat the problem. Some situations may even call for a referral to a specialist. Are you ready to receive a dental cleaning? Please contact us today to schedule your dental cleaning.
Patient’s Benefit from Preventative Services
Many dental cleanings involve a number of preventative services to keep teeth going strong. These services are one of the prime benefits everyone can appreciate from a professional dental cleaning, as most of these services cannot be performed at home.
- Applying fluoride
- Removing built up tartar and plaque
- Treatment and removal of stains
- Polish teeth, fillings and crowns
- Using preventative resins for children
The Types of Teeth Cleaning
There are multiple types of teeth cleaning procedures that are used in different situations. Most people are used to a routine cleaning. This type of cleaning is used when there are no serious issues with oral health or the structure of the jaw and bones. Focus is largely removing plaque and tartar, in addition to treating any stains.
Debridement is a type of teeth cleaning used when there is a large build-up of plaque or tarter. Dead tissue may also call for this type of cleaning. It’s very similar to a routine cleaning, but invests more time into the areas with plaque buildup.
Deep cleaning is the most intense type of cleaning. A loose tooth may require what’s called a “scaling and root planning,” which is also referred to as a deep cleaning. Tarter will be scraped from both above and below the gum line. The goal is to remove bacteria that is out of reach of most other techniques. A topical anesthetic is typically used.
